Transporters constitute a major class of membrane proteins that mediate the exchange of chemicals and signals across biological membranes. They play crucial roles in a wide range of cellular activities, including nutrient uptake, metabolite release, and signal transduction. TCDB, approved by the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB), is a classification system (TC system) for membrane transporters, including ion channels. This classification system integrates functional and phylogenetic information, providing TC numbers, descriptive information, and exemplary data for over 1,873 transporter families, encompassing more than 23,276 unique protein sequences and references to over 23,320 publications. The transporter system is classified into five hierarchical levels, with each level corresponding to a letter or number in the TC number, and each letter or number representing a specific type of transporter.
